How to Connect with Customers? – The Value of Business Integrity

The Importance of Business Integrity

Have you ever read the business values and principles of Unilever, the transnational British-Dutch goods company? The heading on the website reads: Business Integrity (Unilever, 2018).

We have strong values and clear policies and standards to ensure our employees not only do things right but also do the right thing.

In fact, the CEO of Unilever, Paul Polman, once declared success without integrity, a failure. But why so much emphasis on integrity from a multinational, successful business?

Businesses are not stand-alone entities and are run for and by humans. In most public businesses, having a clean image with intact integrity is a source of trust that must be established if the want for sustenance and success exists within you. Your customers keep coming back to you; your investors keep investing in you; your employers keep giving you the responsibility to take the right decisions for the organisation; as long as you keep your integrity. In fact, with the right word of mouth, your customers even connect you with added customers, as long as you keep your integrity intact.

The Value of Business Integrity

Zwilling (2012) at Forbes noticed that, even though organisations understand the value of integrity, they fail to define it well. In most cases, people equate integrity with honesty and morality but such terms are non-quantifiable and relative. What you and I consider honest and moral, hence, may be different, leading to conundrums and unwanted challenges. But, how about we define integrity from the view of the receiver – your customer?

For tradespersons e.g., integrity can be defined as the provision of quality services at the agreed-upon period. We can go forward a step and include customer safety, technical aptitude, problem solving and troubleshooting skills, etc., into the mix and extend the package to desirability for a wider customer-base. How do you display your integrity?
