How to Apply Google Rich Cards on a WordPress Website

Google Rich Cards are simply sets of searches that have additionally submitted structured information to Google, along with the usual crawling of a page. With an increasing focus on user experience, Rich Cards are becoming increasingly relevant for search rankings and website scores in general

Initial Introduction of Google Rich Cards

Google webmasters introduced rich cards in the US in 2016. Within a year, Google pushed the search appearance change globally, making Rich Cards a new system to target and compete through for websites and hence, businesses.

Google has been valuing user experience higher and higher. The value on user experience is hard to quantify, but one thing is clear – Google takes into account the bounce rate of visitors when ranking websites. This means that if, after landing on your website, if users are leaving quickly, you will lose on future traffic.

Many people do not realise that Google Rich Cards are an upgrade on Google Rich Snippets – simply a system where websites were required to submit data in a structured manner.

Google Rich Cards are not much different – the extent of structured data to be submitted has been upgraded to include more components. The one difference is – Google now understands that mobile searches have surpassed Desktop searches – making Google Rich Cards an effective way of holding user attention and providing information in a more visually appealing manner.

Success Stories through Google Rich Cards

The use of Rich Snippets does wonders for some websites, e.g. food and lifestyle accounts. This means that if you have a recipe on a page, it is now virtually impossible to rank on the top without including information, such as the final look of a dish or the list of ingredients. In fact, Google started Rich Cards off by reshaping recipes and movies pages in English, before the global application. Other industries are still lacking behind.

Opportunity for Businesses

We already know that Google prefers structured information – converting the lacking behind of some industries a new competitive point. In simple terms, if you can structure your information – do it and submit it to schema. It is easy to get started.

First, you need to make sure your content fits into one of the following categories. You can click on each category to get more information from Google.

  1. Articles
  2. Local Business
  3. Music
  4. Recipe
  5. Review
  6. TV and Movie
  7. Videos

Out of the 7 options enlisted here, Music and TV and Movie sections are only available for partnering apps. This means that you will have to sign explicit deals with Google if you intend on uploading such content from an independent source, e.g. your business website.

In all cases, you are required to provide information on the content and an idea of where the content should appear, e.g. mobile devices and tablets, through specification of the action you intend on being taken by your users. For example, a “watch action” means that the content is in video form and should be categorised as such by Google on the search.

You also have the option to review the information and the Rich Card before going live. You must also make sure that the information provided is not misleading in any way, shape, or form. Google holds the right to take your Rich Card off the search if found guilty.

If you would like to structure your pages now, please follow the link to the schema.org website. The information has been broken down into simpler components for a step by step follow.

A. Log into your website.

B. Select a post or a page where you want to add the structured information.
C. Select the method through which you edit your website pages. We highly recommend Elementor because of the option to edit pages visually.
D. Create a text box anywhere in the page to put in the information for search engines to pick up.
E. In the text section of the editing box, put in the structured information about the page. Google suggests using scripts in JSON-LD. We will post our code at the end of the page. This code will not appear in the published version of your website because search engines know the nature of the writing. Then, update the page to save your changes.
F. In order to make sure that your code has worked, head on to Google Structured Data testing tool and use the “fetch url” option. Paste the page link and run the test. You can also use the “code snippet” option before pasting the code, to confirm that there are no errors from the beginning.

G. As you can see, there are 0 errors and warnings on our page. The only other thing to do here is to submit your page for crawling from search engines, unless you are willing to wait to be picked up directly. In either case, search engines can now choose to present your information in a more structured manner because they have the right information about the page.

And Like We Promised – Here is the Code

P.S. You can choose to copy and edit our code. Just do not forget to change or remove the Google Tag Manager section because it is domain specific. If you need any help with your data, please feel free to get in touch using the options below.
